Wrote...We had a great trip to Huites, this was my second time on the lake, but my first time to stay at lake huites lodge. The facility is first class and the staff is very friendly and helpful. There were six people in our group and we averaged about 30-40 fish per day per person. Our biggest fish was an 8lb,4oz and we had several 6's and 7's, most were in the 3-5lb range. We fished mostly Texas and Carolina rigged worms for the better fish, although some nice ones were caught on spinnerbaits and top waters. The lake level was dropping while we were there, in the five days it probably dropped about 2 feet. It was a great trip, definitly worth repeating, and we are looking forward to doing that. The weather was fantastic, mid-fifties early morning and mid eighties afternoon.

Wrote...Just back from another GREAT trip to Huites. Weather was a little funky, we had at least four separate front systems move through. Four days at 65 - 67 at 5 AM with two at 77 - 78 at 5 AM with a couple of windy days. It changed the bite most every day. Keeps you on your toes ! Here's my personal tally, does not include Kathy's or the guide's fish (Kathy caught a 7 LB 12 OZ for our biggest the last day....): 1). 11/15 100 7.00 LB largest 2). 11/16 61 5.00 LB largest 3). 11/17 66 7.00 LB largest 4). 11/18 45 6.50 LB largest 5). 11/19 61 7.50 LB largest 6). 11/20 67 7.25 LB largest Total 400 ! Great trip. 45 % on crank baits, 45 % on spinner baits and 10 % on top water.

Wrote...60-80 bass per boat/day. Several between 7-8# Good bite on worms and crankbaits in deeper water. Spinnerbaits worked around wood and rocks if you get clouds and wind (fantastic bite the second afternoon). Sporadic topwater bite, but did have a 7-2 on top and many more early and late the second day. On the worms, be sure to use enough weight (3/8 to 1/2oz). Very important!---Pack as lightly as you can and put virtually everything in your checked bag. Only carry things like camera and reading material on board the plane. Security varies an unbelievable amount, but Tucson is the WORST airport I have ever visited (for a lot of reasons!!!) How about removing your tennis shoes because of the metal eyelets??? Leave an extra amount of time between flights if at all possible. Great lake and lodge, but watch out for the last 15 or so miles of bad road!!!

Wrote... I just returned from another great trip to Lake Huites Lodge. The lodge is in terrific shape with all the usual food and hospitality that I've grown accustomed to. Fishing is the best in my 4 trips to Huites. Early Pop R's produced many 3-5 lb. fish. Zoom Magnum Lizards in Pumkin-Chartruese, 11 in. Blue, Red and Purple worms on flats in 15-20 ft. of water caught several 6-8 lb. bass that were a blast to drag up from that deep. As usual, Bill Dance crank baits work just about anywhere you throw them. Slow rolling larger Spinner Baits produced the largest catches of the trip. Thanks to all the folks associated with Lake Huites Lodge for an excellent time

Also a 11.2 pound fish caught near the same location. The worm bite remains good and topwater using either a chug-spit or a Pop'r has been working in the early morning. Slow rolling big spinnerbaits across the points has also been producing a fair number of fish.

Recently Sonny Talkington caught a 9.2 and 11.0 worm fishing. The numbers of fish remain good with average boat catching 40 to 60 fish per day. Also slow rolling spinnerbaits in deeper water has produced some good fish. Topwater has not been real productive yet, but will be soon! Next should report be soon.

Wrote...Returned Friday from my first and not last trip to Lake Huites. After having all the guys tell me about how good the fishing was in Mexico I just could not feel in my soul until now and NOW I am hooked. We pulled our boats down from the States, which I will never do again, and arrived not really knowing the patterns. The fish day was not very productive, we were fishing to shallow. It was until we asked help of one of the guides from Lake Huites Lodge that we started fishing humps and bumps in 20 feet of water with flukes and Texas Rigged Worms. We where catching fish that all looked like twins.Everyone of the fish off one deep point weighed between 4.11 and 5.1 pounds. It was the most incredidle thing I had seen. One morning we did catch fish on topwater off the top of these humps, they had to be seeing and hearing the bait from 20 below the surface. Since I have returned home all I have thought about is the fog rising off the water of Lake Huites. I am Hooked. Ted Nall

Wrote...A group of five, including my 13 yr old son, fished Huites from October 11-16th. We averaged 50-75 fish per day per boat with numerous fish over 5lbs each day. Big fish was a 9.4, with several 8's and 7's. Probably caught a hundred or more fish over 5lbs. Fish were scattered on points, with few large concentrations, in water of 20-40 feet deep. Best baits were large worms/lizards in greens, reds, blues. Temperature was nice in the morning and hot in the afternoon. Lake is moderately high, but lower than last October/November. Water was stable, and varied from clear to stained depending on section of the lake. Lake Huites Lodge facility continues to be outstanding with excellent rooms and the food was fantastic. This was our fifth trip to the lake and perhaps our best ever. Rene and Russ are great hosts who work to insure your fishing success. Guides in general were much better than previous years.

Wrote...Ok, I finally made it back from the Lodge and have got time to post a report. We mainly fished worms in 20 foot of water on and around the main lake humps. The first cast, the first fish, using a blue 7 inch worm was a nice 8.2 pound hog. Heck of a first fish, even though I did not catch a bigger one the rest of the trip, I was always on point. My good friend Russ pulled a nice 9 pound fish from the same location the following afternoon. Fishing deep with worms produced the bigger average fish while running up the Chimipas and fishing in the Canyons produced the smaller fish, but Countless numbers. The Lake is near full and water is clear. There still is a good chance of more rain this season so if you are headed down soon make sure you bring your rainsuit

Wrote...The fishing at Huites is excellent according to Rene Salazar. Fishing deep in the back of the coves and way up the Chimipas have been producing excellent catches up to 10 pounds using smaller Crankbaits. Flukes and Zara spooks have been working in the calm clear water. Like always this time of year the rains are coming late in the afternoon. The lake is near full with some timber floating in the middle of the Lake. Make sure to bring plenty of 6 inch blue worms and for the clear water use watermelon and pumkin

Wrote...Fished Huites 22nd thru 25th. 1st day, 30-40 fish. 2nd day, 70 fish. 3rd day, 100+ fish. 4th day, 80 fish. Stayed at Lake Huites Lodge. Booked thru Terry Hollan of mexicandadventures.com. Unbelievable trip!! Caught over 50 fish over 5 lbs. Nothing over 10lbs, but 4 between 7-9. The lodge and Renee, camp manager, were truly world class. Took a day or two to find the fish, and figure out how and where to throw the crankbait, but once we found them, the fishing was crazy. These fish are so aggressive, several times, when we'd get them to the boat, they'd have a hook, completely ripped off the crankbait. I'm not kidding, that happened to almost every boat at the lodge. And these were brand new lures! For those who are going in the next month, I would take 4 different types of lures. #1, big, deep diving crankbaits. We used Bill Dance Fat free shad (red/white, blue/white, & citrus shad). Take equipment that will throw them a mile, and get them to the bottom in a hurry. #2, zoom flukes. Only used them very early and very late, weightless, texas rigged with EWG hook 2/0. Best topwater action we found. #3, 7-8" worm (anything with chartruese tail). Make sure to have at least a 3/8 oz. bullet weight, to get them to the bottom. #4, big spinnerbaits (3/4 oz +) that you can run on the bottom, 15-20 ft. down. Talking with the 12 other fisherman down there, I think they would all agree with these four picks. Most importantly, take good equipment. 20 lb test. Long Rods, fast reels. I have too many good things to say about the trip. Please email me with any questions. Good luck, Matt

Wrote...First I would like to thank Terry Hollan and his staff for a great fishing trip. I have fished many places and this may be the best ever. My fishing partner and myself fished March 22, 23 and 24. In order to achieve an accurate number and size of the fish we caught, we used a number counter (clicker) and weighed each fish we thought would exceed 5 pounds. By accurate account we boated 106, 89 and 98 fish and know telling how many we hooked and lost. Fishermen, as you know, if they don't keep accurate numbers and weights, fish numbers and size have a tendency to grow and grow. We caught only 13 fish that exceeded 6 pounds, with the largest at 8.3, but by far 2/3 of all fish caught were between 4 and 6 pounds. Not bad for 3 days fishing and 293 boated bass. On the last evening of fishing, I told our fishing guide we wanted to catch the mucho grande as we were looking for the money fish. Our guide proceded to a sandy point and on 6 consecutive casts my partner and myself boated an 8.3, 7.5, 7.3, 7.0 and a 6.8, and I tail-walked and lost one that was the biggest of all. We ended our fishing trip with this sandy point, as another point could not have possibly been this good. Most of our fish were caught on deep and shallow running crankbaits mixed with Texas rigged lizards and flukes. We did not have the opportunity to fish top water or spinner baits. I will try this type fishing on my next trip as I have already booked for a 5 day Nov. trip.

Wrote...Fished 2/25-3/1. Five days of GREAT fishing for my son and I on our 1st trip to Huites. For those of you "first-timers" like me who couldn't find enough reports to read and wondered if this just might be The Lake of the day. IT IS!! Here's the numbers for my son and I (no guide fish included) 1st day 84 up to 5.5#, 2nd day 117 up to 6.8#, 3rd day 129 up to 7.25#, 4th day 121 up to 6.6# and 5th day (1/2day)up to 7.25#. And sure, we each lost a bigin'. Nice numbers - nice fish but here's the incredible thing... 50% plus would average 4-5 lbs. Big fish in the camp during the 5 days was 10#. We fished both stained to muddy water and the clearer water up the Chinipas around the RR bridges. Fished spinner baits, buzz-baits,popR's, worms, senkos, flukes all in an assortment of colors and caught fish on all but here are the primary baits. New Yamamoto Looong Boy, a soild body tube type bait in pumpkin with chart. tail. As for plastic, my son used the Looong Boy almost exclusively (about a 100) both Texas Rig and C'lina Rig. I used the ole' watermelonseed 8" Lizard w/ chart. tail. Both very productive. But here's the bait of the trip... The 3/4 oz. Senor' Bill Dance Fat Free Shad, for us in Citrus Shad. This bait accounted for well over 50% of the fish. Others in the camp caught them on white w/ red back and white w/ blue back as well as some other custom colors as suggested by Rene. Speaking of Rene, what a host. He and the rest of the staff anxiously await serving your whatever need. As for the Lodge and facilities. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED...period. As for the food. GREAT. As for the guides, most all are very capable but just as you will find here in the States... some are better than others. Ours was Jose and he did a fine job keeping us in productive areas. Also, he was very agreeable to our requests to try other areas and patterns we thought may be productive. And we were successful in finding some, but remember, they fish the lake near daily and they have a pretty good handle on "the bite". Its always great to make new acquaintances. Some prove to become friendships and Josh and I certainly have found one in Russ. Terry, be sure tell him Hola from both of us. And thanks to you Terry, for a first class operation and a Reel Mexican Adventure. By the way, that last 16 miles to the camp is an adventure in itself. I'll be checkin'in with you soon about availability for November.

Wrote...Fished 03/01/01 to 03/04/01 Weather finally cleared on Saturday after we nearly froze on Thur and Fri with the rain. We did however, catch fish, all three days, in the rain and in the chocolate and clear water. Most of the good fish in our group came on SpinnerBaits, up to 9/10# class. Our numbers were not as good as expected, but everyone had a shot at a grande' fish. After our hands heal, we would go back in a heartbeat.

Wrote...February 21st - 25th. This was my 1st trip to the lake and I can honestly say it is by far the best lake I've fished in Mexico. The accomodations were excellent with the entire staff very helpful and willing to do anything to make your stay enjoyable. The food and margarita was excellent and plentiful. I can't say enough about the quality of the fishing. My son & I averaged over 100 fish per day with plenty in the 4 -7# range. All baits worked but the FFShad in various colors accounted for the majority. Found fish primarily on points(deep & shallow) but also found quality fish moving in to spawn in coves in the clearer water down by the RR bridges. Unfortunately we didn't start throwing topwater until last day. Great buzzbait bite last 2 hours of day. Would have been even better if the water had been clearer. Will definitely be back in the fall.

Wrote...Just returned last night from six days (02/15 – 02/20) fishing out of Lake Huites Lodge, the best lodge on Lake Huites. Water in the main lake is still real muddy although the lake level appears to have stabilized. Fishing was good although my personal numbers were down. I averaged 40 fish per day for those six days. Caught quite a few on spinnerbaits (IE largest 7.5) in shallow water in the timber. Caught most and best on ¾ ounce size of the Fat Free Shad in baby bass and fire tiger patterns (IE largest 8.5). There was quite an excellent topwater bite on buzz baits the last hour or so of light each day the wind was not blowing in coves around the railroad bridge (IE much clearer water). All in all a great trip. Many thanks to Rene, Russ & Jesus for making it another memorable trip. See you in November !

Wrote...Just returned from a week on the lake. Once again Rene and the staff at the lodge did a great job. The cooking is superb, the guides get better every trip, and of course the fishing was GREAT! We caught fish with the FF Shad in the big size and the "Guppy". The deep diver we cranked fast to get down quick and bump the bottom. when contact is made slow down and keep bumping. A stop-and-go retrieve worked well at times. The small bait was good in the shallow water, but the hooks can be too small for really big fish. We changed the hooks to one size larger and they worked well. The Citrus Shad color was good but the standard shad color was better most of the time. The lure that suprised us was the Norman Little N in a glitter-shad color. My partner caught dozens of fish over 5# on the only one we had. The other size Norman crankbaits worked very well too. We used Normans the last 2 days, and caught 174 bass one afternoon. What a blast. Some guys in our group wanted to fish just worms, lizards and jig & pig. They did well and all caught big fish. (9.5 the biggest) Best colors are (Zoom) Green Pumpkin, Watermelon, Mossy Pumpkin, & Smoke Purple. Chartruese dip is a good idea as well. 10" worms in (powerbait)Red Shad, & Blue Fleck worked best. Some spinnerbaits were effective with silver and sometimes just white blades working best. Pack a buzzbait. We all got bit well on a buzzbait last hour of daylight in the brushy shallows, but Pop R bite was dead. Our group had 8 people and every one was pleased with thier guides. They are able to communicate well, but they can't read your mind. If you want to fish a certain way, or place, just let your guide know. They are eager to please and very capable. When you go please tell Rene that Senor Crown Royal said Hola!

The Canyons are offering clear water with good fish being caught using Crankbaits on the big points and spinnerbaits in the shallow stick ups. Green Worms and Lizzards are working all over the Lake. The small coves off the main Lake and up the Rio Fuerte are excellent places to catch the bigger females. Fish up to 11.5 pounds were caught this last week with lots of quality 3 to 5 pounders.

We started throwing Fat Free Shad the second day and never stopped catching fish. I am talking about good numbers, 40 fish off one point. We had some luck using worms and other soft baits. We caught about 60 fish a day per person from our boat with 12 fish over 7 pounds caught during our trip. Once again thanks and it's a great Lodge! David Faulkner

Wrote...I just returned from Lake Huites Lodge, Mexico. Accompanying my group was Steve Quinn, editor of In-Fisherman magazine and Karl Malik, founder of the America Online fishing division - MarkSport. We found early morning temperatures to be hovering in the mid-60 degree range, while the mid-day hours warmed to the high 70's. Definitely bring a jacket (or wear your rainsuit) early and late or you get chilled if you plan on traveling to Huites over the next few weeks. We could not find any really clear water during our stay. The area near the dam is quite stained. The area in and around the canyons are lightly stained, but improvement was noted each day. We noted the following patterns during our stay: Early and late in the day: Fish wood covered banks with the Rebel Pop-R, Zara Spook or buzzbait. You need to throw as lose to the cover as possible. The topwater bite was sporadic. Some had decent catches, but no one really hammered them on topwater. Mid-Day: Run the points, ridges and humps with your guide, making a few well placed casts with crankbaits or spinnerbaits. If the fish are in large schools, they will show themselves quickly. Once you find the school, you can get into them for literally a few hours on every cast. Finding the schools, however, requires some running and gunning. Once a school was found, the absolute hottest bait was the large version of the Bill Dance Fat Free Shad in shad colors and chartreuse colors. When the crankbait bite slows, go to a plastic worm and fish the same areas you had been catching them on the crankbait, only deeper and slower. For simply prospecting down the banks, chartreuse spinnerbaits with large gold Colorado blades outperformed willowleaf blades. A good measure of success was had while fishing Texas rigged 9-11 inch dark colored warms on isolated cover (ie. trees, stumps) on points and ridges. Consider slip sinkers at least 3/8 inches when targeting the deeper, isolated bits of cover on the points and ridges. It will improve your feel and not cut down on the bites. About half of the worm bites, especially on big fish, were very subtle or were manifested by line movement and not by a heavy "thud." Several large fish between 6-1/2 and 8 lbs were taken using this pattern. Smaller bass could be taken by pitching to shoreline cover and pockets within the cliff banks. The guides continue to improve on every trip I take to this lake. The rooms continue to be immaculately clean. The food was very tasty and the margaritas and cervesa flowing. And surprisingly the fishing was really pretty good cosidering the water conditions after talking to you we were pretty skeptical about the fishing I think after 3 days of fishing we caught around 175 fish the last two days were the best, we found a top water bite on a pop-r which was incredible and after conversing with Rene on friday night we were convinced on the bill dance crankbait. Saturday was our best we had almost 50 fish on the bill dance most between 3&5 lbs. and over 30 on the pop-r again most in the 3 to 5 range I 'm looking foward to next time, mabye in oct. or nov. I beleive I'll have more people coming , again thanks for everything and thank Rene too and also our amigo Larenzo our guide he was awsome!!!!!!!!!!! Kelly Dunn

We knew going down that the fishing was going to be tough(Terry did give us the option of cancelling or postponing our trip) but I still averaged 45/day and my partner 38/day. The last day was the best with 65 fish for me and 56 for my partner. The water is still muddy but is clearing some with the upper El Fuerte really clear with visibility around 12-15 foot. The fishing is tough and you really have to fish hard to catch your fish but if you are an average fisherman and willing to work for the fish you should do okay. I have been to five other fishing lodges in Mexico(with Lake Huites Lodge being the sixth) and in my opinion Huites Lodge is by far the best I have been to. The rooms are extremly large with excellent beds. The showers are the biggest and best I have had in Mexico(with plenty of hot water). The food was good with as much as you can eat and there were as many margaritas and beers as you wanted to drink. Rene was excellent to deal with and anything you needed or wanted he saw to right away. We never had to wait at all when we were ready to go out on the lake(as I have at some other camps) in the mornings or after lunch. When we were ready to go we just let Rene know and within a couple of minutes we were on our way. I will definitely go back(hopefully in the next couple of months) and would recommend this trip highly. If you are looking for an easy trip with no work involved then you may want to wait three or four weeks before you go so the water can clear a little more but I would have enjoyed the trip even if I had not caught the number of fish I did just because of the beauty of the area and the niceness of the lodge and the people working there. Good fishing to all.
