Wrote...Over the last 5 days fishing has picked up. With catch rates of 50 to 60 fish per day and several 8 to 10 pound bass being caught in 12 to 15 ft of water. The big fish caught today was a 9.8 pound using a Bill Dance Fat Free Shad medium runner. Rattletraps retrived fast across the tree tops are working in the Canyons. 7 inch green Madman worms fished Texas style have been the most productive. This was one of the most productive days on the water we have had since early in the Oct.

Wrote...Well this year was different than most. Water level was down so you had a lot of brush to fish. The bass were on the long slope-ing points with thick brush. The brush flats were also very good. I had topwater every day and every night, others did not. (That's normal) some had a spinnerbait bite on gold blades, I did not. Caught lots of fish on Rattletraps but the number one bait was to drift amongst the dead trees andjust throw a Senko on 20# Fireline and a spinning rod. Flip to little holes and let it sink. Used the new Sticky Weight stuff and it worked real nice. Just pinch off a wad, mold it on the head of the line and instant split shot. Some hot sticks got 80 fish the first morning, others got back to back 8-11's (John and Brad) my partners Tim and Ant got a 9 # and lots of 5-6's etc on senkos. The two 8-11 were on 10-12inch watermellon black seed worms. Rene went out with me one afternoon and had me 12 to two, he was using a 6 inch watermellon worm as thin as a nail, so just about everything was happening. The first river arm had dinks in it ready to hit a RT or Fat free shad (silver) but the big fish were staged out on the secondary points in the heavy brush about 6-10 feet deep. Had a pretty good wind blow the three days and my guide took me to the back of coves out of the wind,,, the fish were at the front of the coves in the wind. Lots of guides used thier ropes to tie up and just fish a big circle of brush. Had Chicken cardon blue the first night,(wow Huge porkchops with brown gravy and mushrooms the second night and big fat steaks the last night. Met guys from another camp in the airport lounge and they did not do well. They were sick hearing our stories of big fish and big fish. Water is stable and things should just get better. If you need info write me. Thanks Terry, loved it. Cosmic.

Wrote...Just returned home after 3 great days at Lake Huites Lodge. Rene, Russ and Manuel once again did an outstanding job! Lets not forget Aurora and the kitchen staff and those oh so wonderful meals. Thanks again to Terry and his wonderful staff for making my second trip better than the first. On to the report....I am happy to say that I managed to catch the big fish of the trip....a nice 7 pounder on a custom poured fluke. Thanks to the quick release of a "possibly" larger fish by our guide Manuel, my fishing buddy Scott Webster has to live with me reminding him that I caught the big fish of the trip till we return to Huites! Thanks Manuel. BY THE WAY...any rumors of my bribing Manuel to throw fish back before they could be weighed are simply not true. We caught well over 300 bass in three days, with over 40 on the first day that were 5 lbs or better. Most of the big fish were caught by "still fishing" spinnerbaits. Yes I said still fishing spinnerbaits, cast them to a likely spot, let it settle to the bottom, then retreive it in small hops with 20 or so seconds between the hops. The fish were hitting mostly while the spinnerbait(skirt / trailer white / chartreuse & the large blade HAD to be brass or copper colored) was lying still on the bottom. I have NEVER fished a spinnerbait like this before! Water is dropping fast, most of the big fish looked like they could use a good meal. Be prepared to actually have to fish to catch the big fish. Most of the fish we caught were on Rattle traps, Flukes, Spinnerbaits and 7 inch Motor Oil Hawg Callers. The last day we got into great topwater actions in some flooded trees between canyons 1 & 2 in the main lake. With Scott providing the entertainment to keep us laughing, including an attempt with a flyrod that cast his hat farther than the fly, we laughed the entire 3days. Thanks to everyone especially Manuel, who kept us catching fish despite our efforts. Will try to get photos up on my website as soon as the are back from the developers.

Wrote...Arrived back home late last night from Lake Huites Lodge. All in all we had a great trip. The conditions were a bit tough, the lake is dropping 18 – 24” a day (e.g., depending upon who you ask). My buddy Mark has to get the “official” big fish at just a tick over 7 LBS. I’m sure I caught one over 8 LBS but Mark had bribed Manuel to release anything I caught over 7 LBS without my knowledge. We caught 40 fish over 5 LBS on the first afternoon. Day two was similar. Day three started out slow numbers wise but provided many quality fish in the 5 to 7 LB range. We did well on weighted flukes but the majority of the quality fish came on either spinner baits (e.g., skirt / trailer white / chartreuse & the large blade HAD to be brass or copper colored) or ½ Oz. rattle traps. The spinner bait method was close to still fishing, throw the spinner bait, wait until it sinks to the bottom, reel tree times, stop, and repeat. Fish were picking it up on the stop and / or start. The rattle trap method was performed in a similar fashion. We finally got into some excellent top water action on the afternoon / evening of Day three (e.g., got some cloud cover). Caught some excellent fish back in the trees (e.g., left side of lake between canyons one & two), mainly on the magnum storm chug bug in silver / black or silver / blue. Great trip as always. Look forward to returning. Many thanks to Rene, Manuel, Russ and Aurora and the rest !

Wrote...Fishing was good overall, especially last 2 days when fish started stacking up at various points in the lake. Lake is low and dropping everyday. Big fish in canyons are not eating well.(Water Level Change?) Many large headed fish caught had concave bellies. Fish were caught that weighed 6 lbs. and had a length of 8-9 lbs.Main lake fish not so skinny. Fluke bite good early, then on to lizards and worms or rattle-traps. Top water bite was slow though caught one nice 5 lb. fish late on Pop-R. Food and atmoshere are second to none. Rooms are clean and well cared for. Boats are in great shape and the guides know how to find fish. Thanks Rene, Russ, Manuel and Terry for a excellent trip.

Wrote...Fished five days from 10-31 to 11-4. As usual the lodge and personel were great and I had a great trip. The fishing was a little tougher than it has been in the past but we still averaged over 150 fish a day for the boat. You could catch lots of small fish by finding the shad and throwing small crankbaits or rattletraps but the better fish we caught all came off of stucture, underwater islands, points and creek channels in the back of coves. The Carolina rig was much better than the Texas rig with pumpkinseed worms. We were fishing the points with 3/4 ounce Bill Dance in solid white and shad colors. We also caught alot of 4 to 8 pound fish by jigging 3/4 ounce rattletraps off the bottom. As I said the fishing was a little tougher and you had to work to find the fish but when we did we would usually catch anywhere from 4 or 5 to thirty at any one location. I am looking forward to my next trip down and wish everybody that is going down good luck.

Wrote...Last weeks weather had a major effect o the fishing. The category five hurricanes that hit Mexico’s pacific coast last week blanked the area with a low pressure front. The hurricane actually made land fall some 300 miles south of us. Other than slowing down the fishing there was no damages in our area. The effects of the storm have passed and fishing should return to normal this week. Fish volumes were still quite high with but know big fish. Gary Byard from Indiana reported that he was averaging 120 fish a day with the largest fish weighing 5.5 pounds. Gary said while fishing in canyon one rattle traps were yielding a fish on every cast. He said that he had ok results fishing plastics of the bluffs with a Carolina rig but no big fish. The bigger fish had gone deep with the low pressure. The good news from Lake Huites is that all commercial fishing has been suspended until next spring. Unlike other Mexican lakes where commercial fishing operations net Talapia through out the winter Lake Huites will have no nets. Due to the lack of rain this year all Mexican Lakes are at a level below normal. In some of the smaller lakes like El Salto this has a major effect. Lake Huites is a much larger lake and has a reserve volume 3 times greater than El Salto when full. In other words if they were to draw all the water that is possible out of Lake Huites it still would have much more water than any of the other lakes in the state. We are looking forward to a great week at Lake Huites. I will e filing my next report this Sunday. In the mean time give Terry Hollan a call at 1-888-744-8867 toll free for reservations or more information.

Wrote...Lake Huites just keeps getting better. Current conditions at the lake are excellent. The weather is great and most importantly the fish are biting. The morning top water bite was incredible. We were pleased to have Mr. Ed Turner from Discovery Bay, California and his group fishing with us this week. His parting statements were; Top water in the morning, change to spinner baits and worms in the afternoon and you could literally fill the boat; We will be back. Ed said they were catching to many fish to count but he was sure they averaged over 125 per day. At times he remarked it was a guaranteed fish on every cast. Ed’s biggest fish was eight pounds. These ten pound fish that are caught at this time will be12 to 15 pounds in February and March during the pre-spawn. Traveling with Ed was John Framstead landed the biggest fish of the week with two fish over ten pounds. Booth fish were caught in the afternoon on worms in shallow water. (less than ten feet) John said to use a ¼ oz sinker close to the bait and a slightly erratic return. So there you have it: The fishing is excellent, The food is superb, The fish are getting bigger and the margaritas are cold. Give Terry Hollan a call at 1-888-744-8867 to book your reservation.

Wrote...The fishing at Lake Huites last week was great! The fish are deep - 25 to 35 feet. The fish are located off of the main lake points, near the dam. Using Carolina rigged, 10 inch red shad worms, two guests from Kentucky caught on Saturday 10-05-02, 34 fish between 7 and 10 pounds and four fish over 10 pounds. A 13.6 lb. very skinny fish was caught on 10-1. Using heavy-weighted flukes in the canyons produced great numbers of fish, some boats catching over 100 a day. The lake looks great - the weather was beautiful!

The lake level was good and is still filling. Water was quicte clear and on the cold side. The sun was incredable during the day and the fish were in deeper water. When the Sun Started to set we headed for the banks up one of the inlets. The Top water bite was fantastic. It seemed like anything you threw was a sure thing. Pop R's provided incredable action. Many thanks to Rene' for allowing me this opportinity. I will be returning with my group!! Jim

Wrote...Okay, guys! The reports are starting to come in. Rene and Manuel have been hitting the lake on a daily basis, testing out all of the good spots from last year and looking for better ones for this year. As always, the lake is rising because of the recent rains. Rene reports that the fishing is excellent - using 7" almost any color worm on the points. He said he and Manuel, his brother, have caught fish up to 7 lbs. almost everywhere they stopped. Fall fishing, in the past, has always been good, and it looks like this year will be no different. See you at the lodge!

Wrote...Okay guys, here you go: Praises: Quanity fish. NO fish stories here--123 bass first day, 154 2nd, and 177 third. AMAZING NON STOP ACTION. I even caught 2 on one lure at the same time! Most fish ranged from 2-6#'s with some bigger (9.8 largest)BUT the fish are thin right now. That 9.8 was 23 1/2 inches long!!Believe it or not, we had a 1 1/2 hour period on day 2 we caught 75 fish IN THE BOAT. All of these counts DO NOT COUNT fish that spit it at or before the boat...Add 50 per day easily! In Feb. it woulda been a 13#er! 80% of our fish were caught on topwater to add to the fun! STRONG fights from all~even the 1 1/2ers! This is a great lake to practice presentations etc. What I'd do different: Less tackle. I brought the "rec. tackle list" and then some...NOT needed. Bring anything topwater youve got, several rat l traps (chrome/blue!), some plastics (flukes worked great and 10" worms, light colors), med and deep Fat Free Shads (largest fish caught on red/white)and stuff to play with. If you're going in May on, dont bother with long pants shirts etc. ITS HOT! I know spanish but if you dont, learn some...it'll help you a ton! Feel free to email me with questions. If you're THINKING of going...dont think---BOOK IT. You'll remember this for the rest of your life (or until you go back!) DD

Wrote...Our group of 15 took on Huites for the first time. We had been going to Guerrero for several years due to ease of getting to the lake. We finally work up and made a change, and what a change it was! A half a day at Huites was better than 3 years combined at the other lake. The largest fish of our group was just under 11 lbs caught on top water (Chug Bug) A few other fish over 10 lbs but the number of fish from 4-1/2 to 9 lbs too numerous to count. The first day we got into numbers of schooling fish in the canyon. Almost every cast was ant least a bite, mainly on rattle traps not big fish 1 to 2 lb average with a rare 3- 4 lb thrown in but a ton of fun. Where can you go and catch 109 fish by yourself my brother 129. My dad and his partner caught 318 the first day alone this number is accurate the fish were counted on a counter and there rule was the fish had to be in the boat. The next two days we went after larger fish and were very successful. My largest was 7-8 and my brother 8-6 but togather we probably caught 80 or more fish in the 5 to 7 lb range, it was unbelievable! Some memorable moments were playing a 5 to 6 lb fish caught in deep water on big worm and watching the fish come up from 8-10' of water, when the fish got to 5-6' water there were 7-8 fish following mine in and most of them were bigger than the one I had hooked, and while fish the back side of a small island the last morning on top water my brother had landed a 6lb and 8-6lb on top water when I finally got into position to throw into the area a dink blew up on my Pop-R, in the process of skiing this small 3/4 lb fish across the top of the water to the boat an monster exploed on the poor little dink. The lodge and staff did a great job and we had a trip of a lifetime, that is until next year God willing and we make it back down. Thanks to Rene and everyone at the lodge for a get trip.

My thanks to Renee and the entire staff at Lake Huites Lodge. The only downside to the trip is that we are so spoiled, we can't have fun fishing any other place! Thanks for a great time, Chris Jacob

Mr. Jack Goldsmith while fishing with his favorite guide Manuel Vega found out just how fast the action can get. The bass had herded a school up against the bank. The top water action was incredible. Utilizing two poles he would just crank one in after the other. He would switch poles while the guide removed the fish he all ready had hooked another and was cranking it in. In one hour and a half Jack caught fifty-four bass all between 3.5 to 5 lbs. Gary from Amarillo Texas liked fishing with flukes best. He caught the biggest fish of his life, weighing in at 7.5 lbs. Jay Zito from Georgia had a superb trip. Jay has fished many Mexican Lakes and stated Lake Huites is by far the best. Jay fished mostly plastics and recorded catches from 100 to 150 fish per day for him and his partner. The level of the lake is still quite high do to the snow melt. The Weather is great. Nights in the sixties and afternoon temperatures hitting 90.

It cooled of 15 degrees after that and the fishing did some too although we always caught over 100 fish p/day and many in the 5 - 6 lb. range with the largest being 8 lbs. The top water was hit and miss and not much on spinnerbaits like it had been the last 2 months. Cranks are still working good with the shallow and mid-range best. Lazy Shad soft jerk bait was the biggest fish producer with size and numbers followed by larger worms and lizards in watermelon and purple mostly, with pumpkin ok too. 5/0 hook with 1/4 - 3/8 ounce weight depending on depth. While most fisherman were catching fish shallow and suspended, most of our bigger fish came in 25 - 35 feet. Excellent help from all the lodge people...again. Thanks! And the lodge does now have an excellent assortment of plastic baits that are exactly the kind of stuff those big fiesty Huites fish love!

Lizards worked the best for bigger fish but many were caught by our other compadres on flukes and bass assasins. It was great to meet some new fishing buddies and the service by Rene and his staff made the trip worthwhile whether you fished or not. To sum it up use topwater in the morning, as well as spinner baits (I had the best luck on a bronze bladed double willow leaf until I broke off on a fish...ALWAYS retie after catching one or two it is well worth the extra time.) After the topwater bite moves down deeper use a crankbait in white or mostly white (you can experiment with this). After lunch you can try deep water like 30+ and catch a lot of fish on the fall or when you are reeling in (this is better if you have a stiff rod since I only brought fast action ones I missed quit a few). Wellif anyone has any questions don't hesitate to email me. Good luck, and tell Saul I said hello. P.S. I cannot wait to go again your staff was even better than the fishing.

Wrote...Fished Huites out of LHL for 3 days last week. Great trip... didn't count fish, but caught many fish on topwaters (blue and chrome chug bug) and Bass Assasins (white) in the early morning and late afternoon. Fished mostly lizards and worms between 9:30am - 4:30pm. Average fish was 2.5 - 3 lbs. Big fish was 7 lbs. Partner had a double digit fish on the last day near the dam that snapped off right at the boat. Got a good look at it... it was almost in the net! Already talking about booking our next trip. Caught many fish between 4-6 lbs. When it starts to get hot out, the big fish are a little deeper. Make sure to move out with them. Guide 'Phillipe' was excellent. Frank

Wrote...I just got back from my second fishing trip from Lake Huites in the past month. Top water is still producing big fish. I would fish either a zara spook or the "big bug" gigantic chug bug. During the day when the sun is out a watermelon lizard or white spinner bait was catching the numbers. If your like me and during the day looking for the big fish I would throw "Bill Dance Fat Free Shad" the big one in chrome blue or a lake green color. Both trips produced about 1000 bass for six of us over three days. Again I would like to thank my fishing partner David Luke for a good time and great laughs and our favorite guide Manuel! Renee and Tachi for the entertainment. A five star facility and I will be back next year!

Wrote...I just returned from another excellent outing at Lake Huites Lodge. Many thanks to all the people who make the outing a truly enjoyable experience. Food and accomodations were outstanding. The staff there does an incredible job to insure that your trip is an enjoyable and relaxing one. I fished for 6 days using many of the following baits: -Flukes, white was extremely hot. Large quanities of fish including many at 7+ lbs. -8" Lizards, chartruese pumpkin was especially good along the bluffs and steep banks. Brought in many nice fish. -1 oz.spinnerbait chartruese/white w/ 1 small colorado blade and 1 medium willow blade worked well along steep banks and rocky points. I trailed it w/neon yellow craw. Larger fish really liked this one. Topwater was spotty due to some of the high winds, but when it was working, a lot of large fish were caught. 9 lbs. was largest caught on a white fluke. I plan to return in November and am already thinking about it. Thanks again for a great time. PS: Condolances to Rene, Manual and Bartimo's family on the loss of thier father.

Wrote...Fishing was good this week at Lake Huites improving slightly over last week. Volumes were up and more large fish were caught. The average catch per boat per day was running 125 to 150 fish. The biggest improvement however was in the size of the fish. Fish weighing in at Six to Eight pounds were common. The two largest fish caught this week were Nine pounds. One was caught by Mr. Jim Hornbeck from Los Angeles and the second by Mr. Sonny Tarkington from Texas. We were pleased to have the staff of Light-N- Strike Lures staying at the Lodge this week. Mr. Sadu Frehm the company president choose Lake Huites to shoot a promotion for his new lure design. Both Mr. Frehm and his production crew were amazed with the action. The morning bite was best on top waters and lasted to about 10:30. A Tiger lure similar to a rattle trap then took over providing great action until mid day. The afternoon bite was best on a shallow diver although deep divers worked well along drop offs and under water mounds. I had a chance to talk with Mr. Sonny Tarkington at the Lodge. Sonny is one, if not the, foremost experts on bass fishing in Mexico. He has logged some 250 days per year for the past ten years fishing the various Mexican Lakes. Sonny’s opinion is that Lake Huites will only improve with time. He estimates that the daily catch numbers will remain about the same the next season will provide anglers with daily catches in the Nine to Twelve pound range. For those of you that are not familure with Lake Huites, the lake is strictly regulated. A very strict Catch and Release Program has been in effect since the lakes opening. The lake is deeper than most other Mexican Lakes and water temperatures are cooler. The deep water and cooler temperatures provide an ideal environment for Large Mouth Bass.

Wrote...Fished 1-9 thru 1-12 four days. The lodge and the staff were excellent as always. The fishing was great with my total for the four days being 435(actually boated) and my friends total being 343. The majority of the fish came on spinnerbaits with a few on rattletraps and a good topwater bite in the morning. All of the fish were taken close to the bank and it looked like some of the females were starting to make nests. No "muy grandes" with the biggest fish being 7# but alot of fish in the 4 to 6 pound range. Envy all of you who are going in the near future because it looks like the fishing is only getting better. Good luck to all.

Wrote...Lake Huites Lodge Catch Report Week Ending 12 January 2002 Fishing was good this week at Lake Huites. Volumes were down slightly. Average catch per boat ranged between 100 to 125 fish per day. Mid week sizes were ranging two to five pounds in mostly shallow water. On Friday we had a cold front come in bringing a good ran and some hale to the surrounding area. By Saturday morning it had passed and we had a wind shift to the south. The front had a positive effect on the fishing as it brought the bigger fish up. The top water bite was fantastic and action was heavy until about 11:30. All the boats recorded several fish in the 6 to 7 lb range. The largest fish was caught by a young man from Nashville Tenn, weighing in at 9 lbs 2 ounces and a length of 26.5 inches. The most effective lures for the week were poppers and spinner baits. Afternoon catches were recorded on crank baits and rattle traps. The best deep water results were recorded on large worms. We expect fishing to improve this week as the fish are entering their pre spawning stages. Catch number should increase through the month of February to greater than 150 fish per boat.

Wrote...First, let me say thanks for a wonderful trip. To be quite frank, I never really believed that it could have been as nice as it was. The lodge is great. The fishing, by my standards, was excellent. The night we arrived, I had a little bit of a letdown when Rene told me that fishing was a little slow because of the cold weather. Well, I proved him wrong. The first day, the first fish, I landed a 6.5 that I would have bet money was a 15 lb. bass. I know all you old head Mexico bass anglers are used to these hard fighting Mexican bass, but for a adolescent Mexican bass angler, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. We finished the first day boating over 80 fish. That evening, I had to ask, is the fishing really slow? Using mostly dark worms, the following two days, we caught fish too numerous to count, 5 to 7 lb. fish with my Dad catching a 9.9 the last day. From start to finish, this is A+.
