All Day 11/23-26 |
| Wrote...Fished Huites Lodge with my 10 year old son for 3 days and had a blast. The lake is still off-color due to the recent rains and most of our fish came out of the canyons. Lizards/Brushhogs fished in 10-30 feet of water accounted for 90% of our fish. I picked up a few on crankbaits, but we never found the mega-school of fish we could hammer with cranks. Sizes ranged from micro to 4.9 lbs, most in the 1-3lb range. Day 1 we had approx 50 fish; Day 2 was slow maybe around 30 fish. Day 3 was 50-60 fish with approx 30 coming on the late evening topwater bite; using buzzbaits and poppers. Even caught a nice channel cat on the topwater, a first for me! Highlights had to be seeing my son get 3 fish over 4lbs and then the last evening's topwater. Food was outstanding, the crew at the lodge is great and took perfect care of us and went out of their way to accomodate my son. Had fun playing pick up basketball games with the guys at the lodge during lunch, although Eduardo really does need to work on his ball handing skills ;) I have posted a page of photos on my web site in the Lake Huites page. Wildlife around the lake is fantastic. We saw bald eagles, golden eagles, hawks, falcons, opsrey catching bass, buzzards eating dead cows (Ryan loved that)plus many other exotic birds/parrots we had never seen before. Look forward to our next trip back!

We found the most productive fishing in the Canyons and just inside the main lake points. Reaction type bite took place in the more stained water. Crankbaits-rattletraps-spinnerbaits but in the Canyons Lizzards and Flukes worked all day long. Every evening late the top water bite worked all over the lake using Poper's and slow moving buzzbaits. Had a wonderful time at Lake Huites Lodge and plan on returning when time premits.

| Wrote...Baccarac is BACK!!! Fished Oct 30 – Nov 1 Three of us pulled a boat down from Phoenix (14 hours), fished three days and stayed at the new Lake Baccarac Lodge managed by René Salazar (formerly Lake Huites). I hired Sixto for Day 2 and René was able to join us for a half day. The lake is 12-15 feet from being full, the water is dirty with only about two feet of visibility and the weather changed considerably each day. The fish were suspended, resulting in no action on top water, jerk or plastic baits. Results for the three ‘gringos’ were: Day 1 - about 30 fish to 10.2 lbs - vast majority between 5 and 7 pounds and most caught on 5/8 oz rattle traps (silver/blue back) or TD vibrations (baby bass). Day 2 - at least 90 fish to 13.4 lbs - our top ten totaled 107 lbs and most were caught on 1.5 oz rattle traps - the evening bite came from clear water at the junction of two arroyos entering the main lake and produced about 50 fish with a combined weight of about 225 lbs. Day 3 - about 30 fish to 9.9 lbs with 18 fish over 5 lbs - most were taken off shallow grassy points and around very small grassy islands - we did not find any clear water and hindsight being 20/20, we should have hired a guide for the day. Comments: 1. We fished Baccarac numerous times before the main lake die off that was caused by a ‘biologist’ attempting to ‘fertilize’ the lake several years ago. Based on two trips in the last ten months, we can say that fishing is now the same or better than it was 12 to 15 years ago. 2. Each of us has caught our personal best big fish at Baccarac and two of us caught them this trip. I’ve fished Mexican lakes for more than 25 years, but never caught a 10 pound bass, but on this trip and in a single day, I caught four bass over 10 pounds! 3. Last December, 27 full man days of fishing at Baccarac yielded between 900 and 1000 bass, with 90% being 1 pound or less and the big fish was only 7.5 lbs. I can’t fathom that all these fish are now 5 pounds or better, but the absence of 3 to 4 pound fish has me scratching my head? 4. These fish are beyond fat, they’re hogs in the truest sense of the word and they are continuing to gorge themselves on a supply of forge fish that you have to see to believe. One 9 pound fish tried to swallow a hooked 2 lb fish at the boat and was caught by dropping the lure back into the water! I caught two fish over 5 lbs on the same lure! 5. The three lodges planned for this lake (only Lake Baccarac Lodge is now open) are paying the local co-op big money to manage the netters who pull their nets during the day and put them out again after dark. The co-op has established a $30 daily assessment per person for each lodge guest or to be collected by ‘local camp hosts’ for each person camping.

The fish we caught were mean, fat, and sassy. We caught lots of fish in the 3-6lb. range. The biggest fish of the trip was an 8 lbr. caught on day 4 on a Canyon 2 hump. Our hottest baits were the Medium and Large Fat Free Shads in Tenessee Shad, 4" Storm Swim Baits in Mullet, 8" watermelon lizards fished both Texas and Carolina style, and Super Pop Rs. We caught most of our fish on main lake humps, islands, and points. Most fish came from 15-40 feet of water. We also had 2 spectacular top water evening bites at the "church". As repeat customers, we truthfully believe LHL has got to be one of the finest fishing operations going. As usual the staff, guides, and accomodations were great. But the most improtant thing is that we're encouraged by the number of good quality fish we caught. Sure we could have caught 100s of dinks but chose not to. We caught good numbers of those healthy 3-6 lb. fish and really had a blast. Gene Krause wrote it right ... like him, we've got swollen hands/fingers and brusies on our sides. Super trip! We'll be back ..... guaranteed. Mike

| Wrote...Day 1: Morning fishing was tough as we managed to boat only ~15 fish. Quite frankly, we just were fishing in the wrong places. The afternoon was a bit better with around 30 fish caught, but nothing over 3 lbs. Being the first trip to Lake Huites, it was a learning experience and provided some information to reflect on that night in hopes for an improved day two. Day 2: Moring fishing started off tough but improved in the late morning. Caught around 35 fish, but once again nothing over 3 pounds. The afternoon provided a remarkable turn of events. With the afternoon sun blazing, we were in need of some shade relief. Decided to venture up the canyon and fish the shade side of the bank, including the pocket coves. Started with a Bill Dance crank bait and never had a reason to switch. On every "grade A" cast, a bass was taken. Largest was 5 pounds. Quite frankly, each time a small fish was on, we were hoping for a "quick release" so we could get another cast to the same structure. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. We left the canyon as the sun became less of an issue, and also because we wanted to test out a spot from the advice of Marlon. This was quite a contrast from the canyon fish that were right up on the bank in shallow water. In fishing this point drop-off, we palced the boat in 18-20 feet of water, casting outward to a depth of ~35 feet. Once we found the bait that worked the fun was on again. It was a watermellon Fluke rigged Carolina style. While a few small fish were caught, the vast majority of fish ewre in the 3-5 pound class. Strikes were not very noticable, something that flew in the face of logic, at least from the Huties stories we had heard. None the less, it was tons of fun. Day 2 total was in excess of 120 fish. Day 3: Early morning found us at the canyon entrance. I threw a crankbait while my partner wanted sone top water action from a Pop-R. Both of us caught a few fish, and all were quality (3lb +). Later we hit some crank baits over some submerged structure in a cove and bagged another 25 or so, one a bit over 4 pounds. An hour or so before lunch we decided to go back to the point from day 2 that produced the greater percentage of quality fish. Nothing had changed as the fish kept hitting the flukes. We decided to try the same pattern on a nearby submerged island. Just about the time we were ready to give up on the spot I caught a 5 pounder, which pin ponted were the boat should be positioned and also were to cast to. As long as we hit the "sweet spot" the fish kept coming. The most pleasant suprise was that we never caught any small fish from this "hole." Only one fish less than 3 pounds. Everything else in the 3 to 5 pound class, with one close to 6. That afternoon we started back in the same spot, but the wind was giving us fits with boat position, and also the "fee" of the strike due to wind created slack in the line. We decided to hit some other spots that had produced before, and they continued to produce. Hit the canyon in the afternoon in hopes of a similar run that we had on day 2. While we caught some fish, it was nothing like the feversih pitch that two had. Once the wind died a bit, we ventured back to "honey holes 1 and 2" for some more deep water fluke fishing. Same result; Quality fish on about every 5th cast. Great trip and great service from the folks at the lodge. Look forward to a trip next year. Only negative that really came out of the trip is the brusies on my stomach that came from setting the hook and fighting fish, where the rod butt was in contact with my stomach. :-) Some pics will be uploaded to www.stlnsx.com/huites

However 6" Senkos and watermelon worms did well, thirty fish were caught between 2 to 8 lbs. The catch of the day happened just as the sun was setting. An 11 lb bass hit my Bill Dance like a freight train. It was the biggest Bass I have ever caught Day Two We were on the water at sun up throwing pop-r's toward the banks. We caught 8 fish between 3 to 5 lbs before the bite dropped off. I then switched back to my old faithful Bill Dance and caught 15 fish with the largest being eight pounds. As the sun raised more I switched to plastic baits and caught 9 more bass before returning to the Lodge for lunch. The afternoon was a repeat of the day before with the largest fish weighing 8 pounds, Day Three After a mild top water bite in the morning it was a 100% Bill Dance day. Over eighty fish caught on the same lure. The largest weighing 8.2 lbs. I actually had to change my hooks 3 times on the same lure. Day Four (Morning only) I didn't even bother to go for the top water action. I started out a sun up with my Bill Dance and caught 40 fish by lunch time. The accommodations and service at Lake Huites Lodge was superb. From point of arrival to my departure everything was handled in a professional manor. My guide Manuel Salazar could not have been better. I will be back next year!!

Manuel Salazar found fish on the main lake points up towards the Dam. Big Bill Dance crankbaits produced fish up to 11.12 pounds with many fish between 4 and 9 pounds. Watermelon senkos worked almost equal to the Bill Dance crankbait. I really think that the fall fishing will be excellent at Lake Huites. Hope to see you at the Lake!

All Bass caught where very healthy because of this recent stocking. The huge rains have the Lake on rise and all the bass near the shore. The flats near Taco Paco is currently loaded with bass. Fan casting a crankbait off the points, you could literally stay in one spot for hours and never have fish stop biting. SPinner baits along the steep banks free falling produced fish everywhere there was shade. This is the most incredible fishing of my life and thanks to Rene for opening the lodge for my mid-summer trip.

I cannot think of a better place for a father to take his son than fishing at Huites. The lake is in great shape. When the rain comes and it fills back up I expect there will be a nuclear explosion of a big bass bite. I do not want to miss it so I will be getting back to you on dates for the fall. We caught many smaller fish on the shore line and in the trees on small cranks and flukes but I know the big gals are fattening up on all the concentrated forage in deeper water. The spawn this year must have been very good as we saw thousands of small frey every where. I think in the long run, even though the draw down has caused some temporary challanges, it will be very benificial. I see alot of vegatation growing every where on the sides of the lake. This in my opinion, will be very benificial to the long term habitat which should continue to keep Huites a world class fisheries for years to come. Thanks for everything Ovide and Jaunito Ovide L. As always, Renee, Russ and the staff were outstanding, food great and most definitely Huites Lodge is the place to stay. The lake was considerably low compared to our last visit; however, even at it's current level, you can't fish the entire lake. Out best luck was with white flukes (small) and white or shad colored medium crank baits. The number were down compared to our last trip; however, we managed to boat approximately 60 bass per boat. My partner (EC) took the big bass honors with a 9 pounder. John, another member of our group most likely took the most numbers caught with his technique of utilizing a 16th oz. weight slightly above the hook with a white fluke. Caught a lot of numbers in the 1-4lb range. It's apparent the large females our beginning to move into 20 ft with some in 15 ft. depth. The 9 pounder was caught in 10 feet of water. The next two weeks should be outstanding for size and hopefully the locals will take the nets out. Water temperature in low 70 range. Timing is right and should be some large fish taken in the next several weeks. Again thanks for the great hospitality! Jerry

Our best three days of fishing just occurred over the last weekend, with catches of 50 - 90 fish a day with lots of solid 3 to 4 1/2 lb. fish being caught at various locations on the lake. Although the majority of very very big fish are still deep, whereas they were 55 feet deep two weeks ago, we are now marking those fish in 40 feet of water, so the warmer weather and the warmer water temperatures have helped the fish move up. Rene at the lodge reports, make sure to bring plenty of small and medium Bill Dance crankbaits, along with watermelon candy MadMan Lure lizards. Flukes working well in the canyons. Today, it's raining and we will report again tomorrow as to the condition of the lake.

Flukes and Senkos over the last couple days have been the hot bait. But also Spinnerbaits on the bottom produced bigger fish. Small crankbaits in the Canyons worked well for the numbers.

The bigger fish are very, very deep in about 50 ft of water and I am told that they are feeding on the bait fish at that depth. We did use jigging spoons the last afternoon and caught ( snagged ) 2 fish over 9 pounds. The weather was very cold and we required much more clothing than in the past, be prepared! Most all of the bigger fish are still suspended in the creek channels and are not relating to any structure. However using spoons and Carolina rigged worms while fishing in 45 ft of water we did have fish up to 8 pounds caught by a group that Rene guided today using watermelon seed 4 inch worms. The water is muddy only in small parts of the Lake, stained in some parts and clear in most parts. Some topwater action in the late afternoon using small Zara Spooks in the very back of the small coves. We look for the fishing to start improving once we get some warmer weather.

With the cold water the big fish this year are still very deep 50 ft deep and can be caught using spoons. Green Lizards with Chartreuse Tails in the worming bait right now. The weather is still very cold and we hope to see some nicer weather soon. Russ

Nothing real big but average size was 2-3 lbs with the largest at 4 lbs. I lost one that would have went about 5 lbs. Bigger fish were suspended in deeper water and would not bite. The sudden drop in water level (about 40 feet in 5 days) put them in shock, turned over the water and the big ones would not bite. We had an incredible experience anyway and had a blast catching all these bass. I will be going back as soon as I can. The lodge and staff were very nice and took care of everything for us.

The water and the weather are very cold for this time of the year, causing the bigger fish to be deep but we have picked up nice fish using spoons and fishing carolina rig, do nothing or french fry style worms. Caught 150 fish yesterday in shallow water up to 5 lbs. using small Bill Dance crankbaits, silver with a blue back. In the middle of the day, after the weather warmed, topwater became very exciting, buzzbaits and small popr's. This year should be a very good year for the water is going to be very stable. See you at the lodge!

The weather was very, very cold for his time year and the water was also very cold. We caught over 80 fish with the four largest fish all of over 8 pounds but we had none over 9 pounds. This lake is unreal and the strong fish made it very fun. Rene at Lake Huites Lodge was as first rate as the Lodge itself. Great trip, I will be back! Hud

We are catching good numbers but no fish over 4 1/2 lbs. have been boated since the cold temperatures hit the area. Client Mark Brown hooked a fish that broke his rod and he says it was a true trophy. Using the graphs, there are many big fish marked in very deep water, 40 feet. We have tried jigging spoons without much success. The smaller fish that are being found in shallow water will hit almost any small crankbait and topwater in the middle of the afternoon. The air temperature is still very cold and the water temperature is colder than normal. I will keep you posted over the next few days. Russ
